When Healthcare Became Sickcare: The True History of 20th Century Medicine

On Tuesday, April 14 at 7:00 PM the Havurah Synagogue will host local author and naturopathic physician, Dr. Rick Kirschner in a free presentation entitled When Healthcare Became Sickcare; The True History of 20th Century Medicine.
In the age of information, the narrative of natural medicine is a story that must be told. Over a century ago, natural medicine doctors recorded their stunning clinical successes in an abundant literature. They practiced front line medicine. They dealt with primary care medical issues, confidently and effectively. They also faced the shadow and threat of the emerging era of big pharma and hi-tech biomedicine, both of which, like noxious weeds, took root all around them, and then took over.
Much has changed since then. In the last century, we have witnessed the medicalization of the life cycle and human health, as if the natural systems that brought humanity to the 21st century were a fluke rather than the common sense connection to the nature that birthed us. How did this happen?
This presentation, co-developed with Dr. Sussanna Czerenko, N.D., will show and explain how natural medicine was marginalized, not by some inherent weakness, but by the combined and corruptive influence of money and politics. The presentation will cover: Origins of Natural Medicine: Roots, Branches and Flowers, Founders of Naturopathy: Healthcare Heroes, A Marriage of Interests: Power, Politics and The Philanthropy of Monopolists, A Century Of Claims: Track Records To Compare, and Options On The Table: The Best Of All Worlds.
Rick Kirschner, N.D., is a best selling author of numerous books and multimedia programs, including the international bestseller (now in a third revised edition in 25 languages, over 2 million sold!), ‘Dealing With People You Can’t Stand: How To Bring Out the Best In People At Their Worst,’ ‘Love Thy Customer,’ ‘Life By Design,’ and the comprehensive communication program, ‘Insider’s Guide To The Art of Persuasion.‘ In 2011, his book ‘How To Click With People: The Secret To Better Relationships In Business and In Life,‘ was published by Hyperion Books.

In a speaking career spanning 30+ years, Dr. Kirschner has delivered his expertise on the Art Of Change to live audiences around the world, and to some of the best known organizations in the world, from NASA to Starbucks, and in thousands of radio and television appearances, interviews, newspaper and magazine articles, from CNBC and CBC to FOX, the Wall Street Journal to the USA Today. He is a long-time faculty member with the Institute for Management Studies, and is a thought leader with Athena Interactive and CanDoGo. Rick lives in Ashland with his wife Lindea and one-eyed cat Rollie.
